iPhone 5 Price Comparison in the Philippines (Globe vs Smart)
Now that Globe and Smart have announced their postpaid plans for the iPhone 5, this leaves the customers the question: Which iPhone plan will give me the most out of my bucks?
The table below shows the comparison of Globe’s Plan 999 and Plan 1799 against Smart’s iPhone Plan 999 for both 16GB and 32GB models. These plans give you the cheapest monthly cashouts which covers both your plan’s monthly subscription fee and the fee for the device (distributed over the period of 24-months). Both telcos lock their subscribers to a 24-month contract once they avail of a postpaid plan.
From the table, it can be noted that Globe offers the lowest acquisition cost for both iPhone 5 16GB and 32GB models. Smart’s Plan 999 (16GB) is almost equivalent to Globe’s Plan 1799 (16GB) in terms of acquisition cost, yet it gives you an additional (80% savings) in terms of added values. Added Values here is the total cost of telco values that a customer gets under the availed contract. It’s synonymous to the real cost of the plan (excluding the device cost) to the telco company. Overall, Globe’s Postpaid options give subscribers more value savings than Smart’s.
Now, let’s look into the details for other plans and iPhone 5 models. All rates displayed below are under the presumption that the customer decides to avail of both telco’s 0% 24-month installment program.
Overall, the only plan and model where you get more value for Smart than Globe is when you get a 64GB model under Plan 999 but the difference is just approximately 1% value savings. The acquisition cost for 64GB at Smart’s Plan 999 is also cheaper than that of Globe’s.
Comparing Smart and Globe’s acquisition cost for Plan 2499 for almost all models, it can be noticed that Smart has a lower acquisition cost than Globe’s. Smart offers the iPhone 5 32GB for free at Plan 2499 while Globe charges P200/mo on top of the monthly subscription fee.
The above mentioned plans all include unlimited web browsing. However, Smart’s unlimited browsing is capped at 1.5GB per month. It means that whenever a customer reaches 1.5GB in mobile internet usage, Smart automatically throttles down you data connectivity to a lower speed. This is barely noticeable if you’re only using your iPhone for iMessage, Twitter, Facebook and Email. Difference is felt significantly when browsing graphic-heavy web pages, streaming videos and uploading content or images.
Given the values of the postpaid plans offered by the different telcos and taking into consideration the different footnotes below, we conclude that it’s Globe is the better option4 in getting a postpaid plan. In terms of acquisition cost, for most plans and models, Globe offers the lowest cost to the subscriber for the entire contract duration. Globe also gives its subscribers more value savings for their money.
However, if you’re looking into getting an iPhone 5 32GB mode under Plan 2499, Smart aggressively offers it for free as compared to Globe’s P200/mo cash out.

It seems that Smart’s sweet spot is at 32GB at Plan 2499 beating the competition with its lower acquisition cost (versus Globe’s 2499).
If shelling out that amount won’t be an issue (and you have all the necessary requirements and proof of financial capacity), then we recommend getting the 32GB under Smart. However, you can get shell out a little less for the 32GB model under Globe’s Plan 1799.
If you’re looking into getting the best deal for your iPhone, it seems that Globe offers you more value for your money, lower monthly payout and un-capped unlimited mobile browsing. Most of Globe’s postpaid offers for the iPhone 5 are competitive but it was 16GB at Plan 1799 that got us – with lower monthly cashout, most of the basic services (SMS, Calls + consumable amount) are already covered by the plan.
